NDANGERED sets no cookies of its own. We don't use analytics, advertising, social media pixels or any other tracking.
The site does keep four settings in your browser: three in local storage and one in session storage. They stay on your device, and unlike cookies your browser doesn't send them to us. UK law treats this kind of storage the same way as cookies, so we list it here.
What we store in your browser
- ndangered-signup
- Local storage. Set to "joined" after you join our mailing list, so the site stops asking you to join. It stays until you clear it.
- ndangered-region
- Local storage. Set to the region you confirmed or picked, such as "gb", so prices show in your currency. It stays until you clear it or pick another region.
- ndangered-animals-hint
- Local storage. Set to "seen" once you've opened the animal list on the map, so the hand-drawn hint stops showing. It stays until you clear it.
- ndangered-bar-closed
- Session storage. Set to "1" when you close the bar at the top of the page, so it stays closed as you move around the site. Your browser deletes it when you close the tab.
We store nothing else. None of these settings holds your email address or anything else that identifies you.
How the site suggests your region
To show the right prices, your browser asks our host, Cloudflare, which country your connection is coming from, with a request to ndangered.com/cdn-cgi/trace. Cloudflare's reply includes your IP address and country, and it goes only to your browser. We don't log or store it. If that doesn't work, the site reads your device's time zone instead.
The top bar then asks you to confirm the region or pick another. Nothing is saved unless you do. Once you have, the ndangered-region setting above remembers your choice.
Why there's no cookie banner
The rules on cookies and similar storage are in the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. A website normally needs your consent before it stores anything on your device. There is an exception for storage used only to make a site look or work the way you prefer. It applies if you're told what the storage is for and given a simple, free way to object.
We rely on that exception. Each of our settings only remembers the region you chose, or stops the site repeating a request, hint or bar you've already dealt with. You can object by clearing or blocking them, as the next section explains. If we ever want to store something that needs your consent, we'll ask before storing it.
Clearing or blocking the settings
To remove them, clear the site data for ndangered.com in your browser settings. Most browsers keep this next to cookies, under a name like "cookies and site data".
To stop the site storing anything, block site data for ndangered.com in the same settings, or use a private window, which your browser clears when you close it. The site works the same, except that the site may ask you to join the list again, the map hint may show again, the top bar may ask you to confirm your region again, and a top bar you closed may come back on the next page.
Other companies
Hosting
Cloudflare, Inc. hosts the site. It processes technical data such as your IP address to deliver pages to you and to protect the site. It also answers the country lookup described above.
The map
The map loads some of its content directly from other services. Your browser fetches it from them, so each one receives your IP address and the standard details any browser sends, such as which browser you use. They are:
- iNaturalist, for species photos (api.inaturalist.org and its image servers)
- Esri, for satellite imagery (arcgisonline.com)
- jsDelivr and unpkg, for the open-source code that draws the map
- MapLibre's demo tile server, for the lettering on the map
Each service handles that information under its own privacy policy. We don't control what they record.
The map's Donate buttons take you to conservation organisations' own donation pages. Those organisations are independent, and we aren't affiliated with them. Their own cookie and privacy policies apply on their sites. We don't take, handle or pass on donations.
Mailing list
Our mailing list runs on Kit (kit.com), which is operated by ConvertKit LLC in the United States. When you submit the signup form, your browser sends your email address and IP address straight to Kit. Kit receives nothing from our site before that. We haven't added any Kit tracking code or pixels to the site.
Checkout
When you pay, you leave our site for a checkout page run by Stripe on buy.stripe.com. Stripe sets its own cookies there and explains them in its cookie policy.
